so great ❤I wish you would record you playing and singing the entire song ‼️
Excellent lesson thanks

Hey, I just wanted to take a minute to thank you. I’m 67 now, I was a bassist for 30 years, taught lessons played in bands, when my wife passed away I start playing around with a key kind of therapeutically but being wired like I am of course it led to wanting to be a keyboardist. So about 5 years ago I found a bass player who would put up with me so I could get it right and he actually bought key board equipment because I was the epitome of a broke musician … anyway sorry for the background but to put it in perspective was the point. The bassist and I used the songs we dug the most when we were young and the way you teach is the bomb. I’m finally starting to play like I always hoped I would and really by learning how to play Steely Dan and stuff like this (Real Book tunes too). But the way you have broken the songs down, taking slow tempos, that’s the way to do it. And the other thing is that you really play the songs that I like most and you got a great touch and perspective. Very generous of you sharing the techniques and like I said perspective. I find myself checking back in with you every year or so, and that’s where I can tell the growth that I have had happen. Because I stayed with it, stayed open to it, and tried my best to encourage others as well. That’s about it. Everyone watching I think this cat here’s tip-top! Best wishes/keep up the great work!💯😜🎶🎵🙏
You are by far one of the best piano teachers on the tube. Very thorough and patient. Excellent!
great tutorial so much better than the sheet music MERCI
5:00
Great tutorials. Thankyou so much for taking the time to do this.
Appreciate the help 👏 (my friend needs the rest of the stings haha)
great tutorial, best i have seen on this song. Love SD. Colin from Aus
my band mates have effed me with learning this song haha But I think I'll get her done. Many Thanks 🙏
Chuck Leavel himself said that the piano solo that’s on the original studio recording he improvised. He said that he had to “learn” it from the recording, because audiences were unhappy if he didn’t play it the same way live. I play lead guitar, and while I don’t play the solo from Jessica exactly the way Dickie played it on the recording, I do play most of the more recognizable hooks. There are some songs that people just really want to hear it the way they remember it. Hotel California and Freebird are good examples. I learned the right hand parts of this piano solo note for note, and I get to play both the piano and guitar solos when we perform live. When I absolutely nail it, people think I walk on water, but since I didn’t compose it, I feel more like I just got really good at copying someone else’s work. I’m way happier with my guitar solo on this song, because I never play it the same way twice; parts of it are truly my own
Excellent method! Do you have a tutorial on Joe Cocker's INCHAIN MY HEART?
2:15
E = mt2 where “t squared”is Tyler Thompson THANK YOU for a breakthrough session INTEGRATING a left hand horn line with badass chords ‘upstairs’… your ear that can hear the n u a n c e s BRAVO 👏🏻 [PS in my equation above e=energy m=music…] 🎹
Whats with the 6/9? They are 9 or 6 , none are both.
Amazing tutorial! Can I pay you to do Mississippi Half Step?
Hey Tyler these videos are so great. Can I hire you to do another Dead tutorial? I would love to learn Mississippi Half Step?
You said E, but you should have said E minor. I'm a hack player by ear. You got lotsa skills, but if you want to teach, please slow down. I want to learn :)
Damn! You’re my Steely Dan guru! I just happened across this song from a cover (checkout Robison and Willis duet, it’s incredible) and here you are !!
Wow this is a superb lesson. Thank you.
This is kick ass man thank you ❤
Thanks a lot twelve years after. One of my favourites songs
amazing tutorial, i couldn’t have done it if it weren’t for this video
6ths and octaves sound particularly sweet on piano
Thanks, hope you well
awesome
This is the channel that made me fall in love with blues piano. You've helped me hone my chops a great "Deal"!
I wonder what happened to this guy and why he doesn’t upload anymore. His tutorials are the best
I love your teaching methods THANKS clear for me to understand.♥️
The right-hand part reminds me of Saturday In the Park by Chicago
Great set of videos on this tune, thanks! If you ever can get this whole thing into a written music piano part, I’m thinking a lot of people would be interested in purchasing it, including myself!
Spot on!
This is the only video in all of internet that teaches this song. Really appreciate your effort!
Please remove ads. It’s terrible.
I know that this was posted 11 years ago, but it's a gift that keeps on giving. Such a useful tutorial - like I asked you to sit down w me at a keyboard and walk me through it. All those cluster chords and cool voicings are in there. Thank you!
Dang, nice voice. Of course the piano is fire 🔥 But I love complimenting a voice when it’s on point, especially since I know it is an awesome complement when it is stated to me. Really helping to add color to what I already poked around with.
there
Is their sheet music. Would be much easier for sight readers.
Just an amazing tutorial. I learned it years ago but if you dont keep it up, you totally forget it. The song has so much going on. I just relearned it and went through each video again. You make a very tough song relatively easy. There were lots of little things that I gradually dropped as I played it and now it sounds better than ever.
You were explaining the song real well, but right after the really cool rift, you’re going way too fast and you’re not even talking about what section of this song you’re on I have everything up until then are you saying there’s 2E flats? Or not
Alright dude, please allow me to make another comment. You give me HOPE! If you still care about this song play it as you humbly decribe your (apparent?) weaknesses, you give me hope that there are people who understand what Joe cocker and his band were about, (OK, so Leon mostly ran things) and whatever, just THANL YOU! sorry I had a bit of winne eh oh gosh just super happy now :)))))))
whenever I see a pianist play stuff like this and on top of that be modest, like saying "I better stop or I might screw this up"... seriously you are so amazing, you could play in my band if I'm worthy enough. you played everything Leon played perfectly. your lesson is obviously oriented towards people who know how to lay piano, so a meager piano-scratcher like me will only need about three years of practice if I'm lucky, to be able to play half as good as you. You Rock!
Or sheet? Please
Feelin Alright, The Letter, Jessica, they're all excellent. Your teaching style is perfect for those of us who, like yourself, play by ear, so thank you! 👍🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹
For people who can play by ear, this is very slow and tedious. Would be nice to condense this into a 1-minute video.
Excellent tutorial, thanks fella 👊
Thank You Tyler for making this video. I've always wanted to learn how play this song but it's been some time since my fingers tickled the ivory. You have a great way of presenting the material and explaining it. Trying to play it not at tempo is very difficult so don't sweat if you make mistakes. 🤗
Would be nice to do another video, but condensed into 1 minute for people who can play by ear.
dude your playing is fucking awesome. replaying that intro a couple times before getting into the lesson
